About the
Lachlan Valley Railway
The LVR was formed in 1974 and
incorporated in 1977. The society’s aim is to restore, maintain
and operate vintage trains.
Based at Cowra NSW, the society
occupies the Locomotive Depot and Roundhouse, vacated by the State
Rail Authority during the 1980s. It was opened in 1923, replacing
the original depot located adjacent to Cowra Station. This depot was
opened in 1886 when rail reached Cowra from Harden.
The current depot once boasted award
winning gardens, which fell into disrepair during the 1970s. When
closed by the SRA, the LVR immediately took over, since the LVR was
occupying part of the complex. The gardens have been restored, and
the LVR now houses the full collection of locomotives and rolling
stock at the depot.
Since formation of the society, the
collection has grown with steam locos, diesel locos, rail motors,
rail cars, passenger cars and freight stock being added. Some items
date back to the last century.
Volunteers from across NSW spend
their spare time restoring , and operating trains. You can become a
member too. Click here for more information.
Regular running weekends see
generally steam hauled trains depart from Cowra Station to
surrounding areas or the LVR may visit distant towns over an entire
weekend.
Full facilities are available at the
depot, with accommodation in the 1920s sleeping cars being provided.
Souvenirs, snacks and refreshments can be purchased at the main
entrance.
Visitors are welcome to explore the
locomotive depot and museum, (now open daily) or take a ride when
trains are operating. Groups and charters for weddings or other
occasions are available all year round.
